Plane is a project tracker for teams that only want the useful parts of Jira. You do not start with years of settings and plugins.
It holds tasks, bugs, customer requests, projects, fixed planning periods, larger feature groups, documents, estimates, and progress views. Teams can use Plane's cloud or run versions on their own infrastructure.
The clean interface is a real reason to test it. Self-hosting is another reason, but it is a different decision. Choose Plane for the way your daily work runs. After that, decide whether your team also wants to operate the project system itself.
What Plane calls the work
Plane calls a task, bug, or request a work item. Related work lives inside a project.
A cycle is a fixed period, often one or two weeks. The team chooses a group of items to finish during that time. A module groups work that belongs to a larger feature or release area. An initiative can connect several projects to a company goal.
The same work can appear in a list, board, calendar, spreadsheet, or timeline. Dependencies show that one item must finish before another can begin. Pages and the workspace wiki hold plans and decisions beside the work.
Intake collects new requests before they enter the normal backlog. Business adds forms and email intake. A customer record can connect requests from one company to the items the team plans.
That is enough breadth for a product or software team to replace an issue tracker plus some project documents. The public feedback consistently likes the speed, clean design, keyboard use, and easier start. It also likes having cloud and self-hosted routes.
Import one real project
A sample board with ten tasks will make almost any project product look good. Import one project that contains the reasons the current system became complicated.
Bring in open and closed work, comments, attachments, people, labels, dates, estimates, subtasks, dependencies, and links. Include one awkward custom field and one item with a long history. Plane can import from Jira, Linear, Asana, ClickUp, CSV, Confluence, and Notion. It can also import workspace members, but you still need to check the exact mapping.
Count what moves correctly. Then count what becomes plain text, loses authorship, drops an attachment, changes a date, or cannot be imported.
Ask a normal team member to find yesterday's decision and the reason a bug was closed. Then ask for an old file and every unfinished item for the next release. An imported item is not useful merely because it exists somewhere.
Do not move every project at once. Run the old and new systems beside each other for one real cycle. Keep a clear cutoff so people know where new comments belong.
Finally, export the test project. Check CSV, Excel, or JSON where the plan supports them. Open attachments separately. The team should know how its history leaves before making Plane the only copy.
Run the full planning cycle
Create work from three routes: a team member, a public intake form, and an email. Triage it. Reject one request, merge a duplicate, and turn another into planned work.
Estimate the items and place them into a cycle. Link several to a module. Add a dependency that delays another task. Move the deadline and confirm that the timeline makes the effect clear.
During the cycle, split an item, move unfinished work forward, change priority, and record a decision in a page. Track time if that matters. Ask a customer or guest to comment without exposing private work.
At the end, build the report the team already uses. Show planned work against finished work and flag anything added after the cycle began. Include blocked items, changed scope, time, module progress, and release risk.
Reporting is one of the areas where Plane can trail mature products. The paid plans include dashboards, cycle charts, project overviews, and advanced widgets. A feature name does not prove that the exact report you need exists.
If a manager must rebuild the status in a spreadsheet every Friday, include that work in the decision. A beautiful board does not replace the report used to decide staffing or a release date.
Test the phone and the connections
Project changes happen away from a desk. Open the mobile app during a real workday. Create an item, add a screenshot, change the owner, reply to a comment, and find the current cycle.
Mobile polish appears as a mixed concern in the research. The only useful answer is whether the current app handles the actions this team needs. A manager who only checks status has a different requirement from an engineer who triages a production incident by phone.
Test every important integration in both directions. Change a connected GitHub or GitLab issue in Plane, then change another in the code service. Create an item from Slack and check whether later comments remain understandable. Link a Sentry error and close it.
Disconnect an integration. Reconnect it and look for duplicates, missing comments, wrong states, and private information posted to the wrong channel.
Plane has an API and an active repository, but a logo or endpoint does not remove ownership. Write down which system controls each field. Otherwise two tools can keep correcting each other.
Cloud and self-hosting solve different problems
Plane Cloud removes the work of deploying and updating the service. Self-hosting gives the buyer control over the infrastructure, data location, network access, and timing of changes.
That control can be necessary for a company policy, an isolated network, or a customer contract. It can also be an expensive hobby when the only reason is that self-hosting sounds cheaper.
Running Plane means operating the application, database, object storage, email, identity connection, certificates, monitoring, backups, and upgrades. Attachments and database records both matter. A database restore without the files does not restore the project.
Build a production-like clone. Import the test project, make a backup, then delete a work item and an attachment. Restore both. Search for the item and open the file.
Upgrade the clone through the same versions production will use. Test login, permissions, integrations, email, search, and the mobile app afterward. Roll back if the upgrade fails. Record the time and the person needed.
Next, stop one machine or service. Decide what availability the project system needs during an incident. If the team keeps outage instructions only inside Plane and Plane is down, it has lost the instructions at the worst time.
Historical self-hosting discussions mention Docker, login, upgrade, and backup problems. They do not prove the latest release will fail. They show which tests cannot be skipped.
Open source does not mean every feature is free
Plane has an active public repository and a self-hosted community route. Thousands of repository actions show a large group paying attention to the product.
That attention is not a customer score. It does not promise that every cloud or commercial feature appears in the free self-hosted version.
Plane uses an open-core business model. The core is open. Some advanced features, company sign-in, access controls, and support require a paid edition. Managed and isolated deployments also cost money.
Some self-hosters object strongly to feature gates and pricing terms. The practical answer is a written feature list. Mark every required field, workflow, report, role, identity method, audit log, support promise, and integration. Ask which edition includes it and whether any seat minimum applies.
Review the license and commercial terms with the right legal and purchasing people. Do not build a migration plan from the word “open-source.”
Cloud pricing is low at the annual rate
Plane Cloud has a free plan for up to 12 users. It includes projects, work items, cycles, modules, intake, estimates, pages, five layouts, views, and 500 monthly AI credits per seat.
The pricing page currently displays annual rates. Pro costs $6 per seat per month and includes 1,000 AI credits per seat. It adds custom work item types and fields, a workspace wiki, time tracking, templates, dashboards, initiatives, team spaces, and more integrations. A two-week trial is available.
Business costs $13 per seat per month at the displayed annual rate. It adds 2,000 AI credits per seat, project templates, recurring work, forms and email intake, customer profiles, and more advanced dashboards.
Enterprise Grid is quoted. It covers managed private deployments, fine access control, several workflows with approvals, LDAP, API audit logs, migration help, and custom support.
The cloud price for ten Pro users is $720 per year at that rate. That is attractive if Plane replaces both the tracker and some knowledge work. Compare it with the time needed to migrate, rebuild reports, and maintain integrations.
Self-hosted commercial pricing can follow different rules. Get the exact edition, seat count, support, upgrades, and renewal terms in writing. Add servers, backups, monitoring, testing, and operator time. Free software does not make the deployment free.
Who should choose Plane?
Plane is worth testing for a software, product, or operations team that wants a clean project system. It has broad planning and wiki features without Jira's weight. It is especially interesting when cloud, private, self-hosted, or air-gapped deployment is a real requirement.
It is harder to recommend when the team depends on advanced reports, deeply customized workflows, or integrations that the trial cannot reproduce. It is unnecessary to self-host when the company has no policy or risk that justifies another service to operate.
We did not import a project, run a cycle, use mobile, deploy Plane, restore a backup, upgrade it, or contact support. Formal review samples are positive but small. Repository enthusiasm does not fill those gaps.
Our rule has two parts. First, import one complete project and run a real cycle. Use intake, dependencies, recurring work, permissions, pages, the phone, integrations, reports, and export.
Second, if self-hosting, upgrade a clone and restore the database plus files after a failure. Price the exact commercial features and operator time.
Choose Plane only if the team can do the work and find its history, and the selected deployment can recover. A faster board is useful. A project system the team cannot report from or restore is not.
